Dense with documentation and editorial content, the William and Mary College Quarterly’s contributions in the field of family history established it as the fountainhead of Virginia genealogy. In the two series published between 1892 and 1943, the Quarterly was under the direction and editorship of Lyon G. Tyler and Earl Gregg Swem. Their imprint on the Quarterly made it a model of authority, and today it is required reading for any serious investigation of Virginia genealogy. We take great pleasure therefore in announcing the reprint—in five volumes—of a complete collection of the family history articles which appeared in this highly respected periodical.

The five volumes contain every family history article published in the Quarterly from the commencement of the 1st Series in 1892 until the completion of the 2nd Series in 1943, at which point genealogical contributions to the Quarterly ceased. The total output of family history articles in this 50-year period was immense. No fewer than 500 genealogies were published—nearly one-third of them in multiple installments—and these, together with a substantial number of Bible records, are reprinted here in entirety. Also reprinted is the two-part history of “The Goodwin Family in America,? which originally appeared in 1897 and 1899 as supplements to Volumes VI and VIII. With these five volumes the researcher has within reach a comprehensive collection of family history articles with accompanying indexes to the 100,000 persons mentioned. For ease of use, each volume is separately indexed.

Following is a complete list of the families described in the titles to the hundreds of genealogies in this mammoth set, though they constitute only a fraction of the total number of families indexed: Adams, Alexander, Allen, Anderson, Andrews, Armistead, Ashton, Ashton-Clare, Bacon-Hobson, Bagnall, Baker, Ball, Ballard, Bankhead, Banks, Bayne, Beard/Baird, Behethland, Bennett, Berkeley/Berkley, Bernard, Bevill/Beville, Bickley/Beckley, Binford, Blackburn, Blaikley, Blair, Blunt, Boddie, Bolling, Booth, Borden, Boxley, Branch, Braselton, Bray-Johnson, Brett-Isham-Randolph, Brodnax, Bronaugh, Brooke, Broun, Browne, Bryan, Bryant, Buckner, Bugg, Burke/Bourke, Burton, Burwell, Bushrod, Calhoun, Calthorpe, Calvert, Camm, Carlyle, Carr, Carrington, Carter, Chancellor, Chapman, Chappell, Chiles, Chilton, Chisman, Christian, Churchill, Clack, Claiborne, Clark, Clemens (Mark Twain’s Virginia kin), Clopton, Cobb/Cobbs, Cocke/Coke, Cole, Collier, Conway, Copland, Cornick, Coutanceau, Dade, Dale, Dandridge, Dangerfield, Daniel, Davenport, Davis, De Graffenreidt, DeJarnett, De Neufville, Dennett, Digges/Degge, Dillard, Dixon, Doswell, Downing, Downman, Edloe, Edlow, Edmonds, Edwards, Eldridge, Ellington, Ennals, Eppes, Eustace, Evans, Exum, Fairfax, Farrar/Ferrar, Fitzhugh, Fleming, Flournoy, Fox, Francisco, Friend, Fry, Galt, Garrett, Gaskins, Gatewood, Gilmer, Godfrey, Gooch, Goodwin, Grantland, Graves, Gray, Green, Greenhow, Gwyn(n), Hall, Hamlin, Hardaway, Hardwick, Hardyman, Harrison, Harwood, Hatcher, Hatton, Hawes, Hay, Heale, Heath, Herbert, Herndon, Hickman, Hicks, Higginbotham, Hill, Hope, Howard, Hubbard, Hudson, Hume, Hunnicutt, Hunter, Inge, Ironmonger, Ivey, Jameson, Jefferson, Jerdone, Jeter, Jett, Johnson, Jones, Jordan, Joynes, Kelly, Kenner, Kennon, Kerby, King, Lamb, Langborn, Langley, Lanier, Larue, Lawson, Lee, Leger, Le Grand, Lenud, Lewis, Lightfoot, Lindsay-Opie, Lipscomb, Lister, Littleton, London, Lowry, Ludwell, Lunford, Lygon, Maclin, Macon, Madison, Mains, Marmaduke, Marnix, Martin, Massie, Mathews, McCarthy/McCarty, McClurg, McGehee, Mead, Meaux, Menefee, Metcalfe, Mettauer, Mill, Miller, Minge, Minor, Moffett, Monroe, Moore, Moorman, Morton, Mossom, Mottrom, Muscoe, Neville, Nicholson, Norsworthy, Norvell, Oldham, Otey, Owen, Page, Palmer, Paxton, Peachey, Peck, Pegram, Pendleton, Pescud, Peterson, Phillips, Pinkard, Pollard, Pope, Porter, Poythress, Preston-Tyler, Price, Pulliam, Purifoy, Quarles, Randolph, Ransom, Ransone, Ravenscroft, Reade, Reynolds, Richeson, Roane, Robinson, Roper, Ruffin, Ruggle, Russell, Saunders, Savage, Scarburgh, Scott, Seawell, Selden, Sheilds, Shelton, Shepard, Shields, Short, Shuck, Sims, Skelton/Shelton, Smith, Southall, Sturman, Sweeney, Tabb, Talbot, Taliaferro, Talman, Tanner, Taylor, Terrill, Thompson, Thornton, Throckmorton, Thruston, Timson, Tompkins, Townshend, Travis, Triplett, Tyler, Underwood, Upshaw, Upshur, Utie, Venable, Waddy, Wade, Walker, Wallace, Waller, Walton, Ward, Ware, Warren, Washington, Webber, Wickliffe, Wilcox, Willis, Wood, Woodhouse, Woodson, Wormeley, Wright, Wiatt, Wyche, Wythe, Yager, Yewell, and Yates.
